Take a trip to Hwange National Park on your Zimbabwe Vacation
Covering a 14,650 square kilometre plateau in the northwest corner of Zimbabwe is Hwange National Park. The largest and most visited national park in the country, Hwange is home to all of Zimbabwe’s specially protected species.
Once home to the nomadic San (bushmen) who profited from the migrating game found in the area, Hwange served as the royal hunting ground for Mzilikazi, a Ndebele warrior-king early in the 19th century. The area was designated as a national park in 1929 and was named after a local Nhanzwa chief.
Today, the park enjoys one of the highest concentrations of game in Africa, hosting over 100 mammals and 400 bird species. It is known as one of the few great elephant sanctuaries left on the continent, providing a habitat for some 30,000 elephants. There are great herds of Cape buffalo as well as zebra, giraffes, antelope, rhinos and hippopotami. Predators like lions, leopards and cheetahs are also present in Hwange but prove to be more elusive than in other games. Along with Kruger National Park and the Selous Game Reserve, Hwange supports some of the larger surviving populations of the threatened African wild dog travel to Zimbabwe.

We started planning this trip 6 months prior to our travel date and had a lot of questions regarding this trip. We traveled to Quito, Ecuador, the Galapagos, The Sacred Valley in Peru, Machu Picchu, and Cusco in Peru. Not only were the destinations and accommodations excellent, but every tour guide and driver were beyond excellent. The entire trip went smoothly every step of the way, which was amazing given the fact that there were numerous flights and hotels included in our package. We found out that the tour company that Goway used, Condor Travel, checked on us with our guide to make sure we were doing OK which we thought was very nice but also amusing as we are fairly fit older adults. Would also like to mention that we did a cruise thru the Galapagos on the Galapagos Legend which was arranged thru Go Galapagos - Kleintouurs. This portion of our tour was also excellent as were the wildlife guides and staff.
