Insider Travel Tips

Discover essential travel documentation needed for your Malaysian adventure.

What documentation is required to visit Malaysia?

Prior to arrival in Malaysia, travellers must fill out the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online. Visitors from Canada or the United States require a passport valid for at least six months, plus a blank page for entry stamp. You will be processed upon arrival by the Malaysian Immigration Department who may require proof of an onward or return plane ticket. No additional visa is required for stays under 90 days.

What are some of the best places to visit in Malaysia?

Flying into the gateway to Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, travellers will be drawn to its history and modern architecture. Explore the famous Petronas Twin Towers, lush Perdana Botanical Gardens, and sample the divine melting pot street food. Travelling north, history seeking visitors will enjoy a stop in George Town on Penang, known for its protected heritage colonial buildings. Continuing north, a trip to the Langkawi islands is not complete without riding to the peak of Gunung Mat Chinchang, where the famed Langkawi Sky Bridge is located. Consider flying into the remote Mulu National Park with its stunning limestone karst formations, enormous cave networks, cliffs, and gorges. Spend time relaxing beachside or snorkeling among the colourful reefs just off the shores of the Perhentian Islands.

How much does it typically cost to vacation in Malaysia?

Malaysia offers travellers city, beach and adventure destinations, all with the option to travel budget conscious, luxuriously or somewhere in between. When planning a vacation, look to budget between $300 to $350 per day, per person, not including international airfare. If you want to visit both of the Malaysian land masses, an almost two hour flight and additional modest cost will be required to travel between the two. Dining is generally considered very inexpensive, while the influence of Muslim religion in Malaysia makes it expensive to drink heavily taxed alcohol. A Goway Destination Specialist can plan and budget every step of the journey.

How do I plan a trip to Malaysia?

With Malaysia spread across two land masses, it can be a challenge to decide where to visit. Want to climb the 272 steps to the limestone Batu Caves or hike amongst lush tea plantations in the Cameron Highlands? To see as many highlights as possible, plan on spending 10 to 14 days in Malaysia. Rely on a Goway Destination Specialist to craft a tailor-made trip to Malaysia for you!

Can you drink tap water in Malaysia?

Most homes, hotels and buildings use a water filtration system as aging infrastructure and sediment issues are common in Malaysia. It is recommended that visitors solely rely on bottled water for consumption, even while brushing teeth.

What should I pack for a trip to Malaysia?

Malaysia has a tropical climate, with heat and humidity soaring high in the summer months. Pack accordingly with loose moisture wicking clothing and lightweight shoes. That said, the air conditioning indoors can be blasting, so always bring along a light sweater too. Packing a waterproof jacket and shoes is important for the fall and winter when rainfall accumulates.

What currency is used in Malaysia?

The official currency of Malaysia is the Malaysian ringgit (MYR). While exchange rates can vary, typically US $1 is worth 4.5 MYR. If buying anything on the street, vendors will exclusively take cash. Otherwise the use of credit cards is widely accepted. When travelling outside of cities, ATM’s can be more difficult to find, so be sure to take out cash before departing.

Is Malaysia LGBTQ+ friendly?

Malaysia is the least welcoming Asian country for LGBTQ+ travellers. Same-sex relationships are illegal and punishable by law. Furthermore, the has no laws that protect the LGBTQ+ community against discrimination or hate crimes. Some travellers have reported finding an LGBTQ+ community in Kuala Lumpur. That said, if planning a visit to Malaysia, be discreet, alert, and consider travelling in a group. In general, no matter your sexual orientation, public displays of affection are not appropriate.

We recently completed a custom Vietnam tour organized by Goway, and it was everything we asked for and more. We would definitely choose Goway again. The true highlights of our trip, however, were our two guides: Vu Dang and Thien. They truly made our experience unforgettable. Both were incredibly knowledgeable, thoughtful, and kind. Their pride in their Vietnamese heritage shone through in every conversation, making our learning experience both deep and engaging. We learned so much in such a short time, and it was always fascinating. I would highly recommend these two guides to anyone visiting Vietnam!Laura Derbyshire

Everything was expertly planned, from the drivers to the hotels to the tours to the flights. We particularly enjoyed Hobart and the animal sanctuary, Adelaide and the trip to Kangaroo Island, Melbourne and the evening tour with dinner and drinks, and Sydney with the private boat cruise of the Harbour. We will definitely use Goway again.SARA Wiebe

There were 4 travelers on this trip. All of us were in our late 70's. We started planning this trip 6 months prior to our travel date and had a lot of questions regarding this trip. Our Goway Travel Specialist, Karen Larrota, always answered our questions in a timely and complete manner. We traveled to Quito, Ecuador, the Galapagos, The Sacred Valley in Peru, Machu Picchu, and Cusco in Peru. Not only were the destinations and accommodations excellent, but every tour guide and driver were beyond excellent. The entire trip went smoothly every step of the way, which was amazing given the fact that there were numerous flights and hotels included in our package. We found out that the tour company that Goway used, Condor Travel, checked on us with our guide to make sure we were doing OK which we thought was very nice but also amusing as we are fairly fit older adults. Would also like to mention that we did a cruise thru the Galapagos on the Galapagos Legend which was arranged thru Go Galapagos - Kleintouurs. This portion of our tour was also excellent as were the wildlife guides and staff. We continue to discuss how wonderful this trip was with our family and friends and how wonderful this experience was. Would definately use Goway for our travel needs in the future.Dianne

After spending some time with our agent, we felt that she understood exactly what we had in mind as far as the level of service, etc, we were hoping for. The trip exceeded our expectations. Lori kept us busy(not too busy!) and we had many, many very exciting experiences. Bruce Belshaw

Aylin is an exceptionally proficient advisor. Coordinating my clients simultaneously often feels like herding cats, but she has remained patient and accommodating through every modification and delay. Goway continues to be my go-to for complex itineraries, and they never disappoint.Nick Cron, ACC

My daughter and I had a wonderful 2 weeks in New Zealand! The country is so beautiful and the people so friendly. Our destination specialist did a great job with planning and organizing the itinerary, choosing our hotels, and organizing transportation. The hotels were absolutely beautiful and we had great views. We felt right at home and found all of the staff to be friendly and accommodating. There were no issues with our itinerary and our excursions we were always on the list. Our transportation was always ready and waiting for us. We want to thank Goway Travel for their hard work and patience with us in planning this trip. Any changes that needed to be made were communicated timely. We also want to thank you for the beautiful weather during the entire 2 weeks it was perfect every day 😀. It was a memorable trip that we will never forget and we will think of Goway when we plan our next adventure. Because it was not just a vacation; it was an adventure!Connie Wenhardt

Brigitta Fuller is Amazing! She was my group coordinator. She understood the assignment and all the nuances I was trying to achieve. The itinerary she curated was fantastic. If you want someone who truly cares about her group and what they are trying to achieve. I will always reach out to Brigitta first for Europe groups. Kathryn Walker
